Storm Drain Pollution Campaign

Deliverables

Objective

***Received Honourable Mentions for the RGD’s Social Good Student Award***

Rain in the drain is an information campaign to help residents of Kingston understand the effects of storm drain pollution on our local waterways and water resources. The information is primarily delivered via social media and interactive in person events tagging on to other events held in downtown Kingston.

This project was an iterative design research project starting with a literature review, survey and a comparative analysis. Mandates were determined and the initial design was created, from there the design went through user testing and based on the feedback the final design was created.

Each post has a different message, one explains how excess fertilizer can affect our aquatic life and interfere with a local pastime, by closing beaches and swimming areas.

Another post sharing information about an event where we would create a mural around a storm drain to raise awareness during the event and after.

Based on the research, the tone of the campaign needed to be approachable and friendly.  In addition to the open copy, the colours were chosen to be unexpected, for an environmental campaign, and inviting, with the aim that it will stop viewers from scrolling to interact with our information.

Printed Information

Two, double sided flyers were created, one to explain how to take the pledge to care for a nearby storm drain. The other is general information about storm drain pollution and tips on how to prevent it.

The same colour palette was used as well as the customer illustrations.
